Top 5 Hongdae restaurants by the Locals

Hi everyone!

Today, I’m going to introduce things to enjoy in Seoul recommended by Korean locals! I have lived in Korea for more than 30 years, and I am Korean!

I also wanted to go to a restaurant recommended by locals when I went abroad, but I don’t think it was easy to find a proper restaurant due to language barriers and so on! So I prepared this post and hope it helps!

There are many posts about Seoul restaurants besides Hongdae, so look around!

Then let’s get started!

Top5 Hongdae restaurants

1. Yuk Mong

1) Address : 19, Yanghwa-ro 16-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
2) Recommended menu: Handon Modum Set
3) Opening hours: 15:00 to 24:00 daily

Yukmong is a place that sells pork belly that you must try when you come to Korea. There are several criteria to properly taste Korean pork.

First, find a place that sells good meat. Second, I look for a restaurant where employees grill meat. Third, find a place where side dishes are delicious.

Yukmong is a restaurant with all three of these, so I recommend it! For the menu, Handon Modum Set is recommended, and Handon means Korean pork, and Modum means that you can taste various parts.

You can taste various parts of pork, so it’s delicious to eat, and it’s 59,000 won for 600g, so the price is reasonable!

That’s why I recommend Top5 Hongdae restaurants!

It’s a popular restaurant, so there’s a bit of waiting, but I think it’s a place to wait!

The location is just a 500m walk from Exit 9 of Hongdae Station!

2. A-UNE Daeji BullBaek

1) Address : 149, Donggyo-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
2) Recommended menu: Daeji BullBaek
3) Business hours: 10:00 to 23:00 (weekends closed)

Do you know the famous bulgogi in Korea? This place sells bulgogi, and you can really try the original Korean style bulgogi.

It’s short for Daeji (=pork), Bull (=Bulgogi) and Baek (=home meal)! Eating Daeji BullBaek means that you are enjoying Korea properly!

You can order two servings each, so if you go with two people, just say, “Daeji BullBaek Two!”

And kimchi stew is delicious, but it can be a little spicy for foreigners, but if you like spicy taste, I hope you try kimchi stew.

I’m drooling while writing. It’s a really delicious place.

3. Pungcheon JANG-A

1) Address : 39, Donggyo-ro 27-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
2) Recommended menu: JANG-A (Eel)
3) Business hours: 11:30 to 22:20 (break time 15:00 to 16:30)

There are times when you have to walk a lot when you travel to Korea, right? In Korea, we eat eel when that happens. Because it’s good for stamina.

Grilled eel may be a little unfamiliar to foreigners, but it is a popular menu and a high-end menu in Korea.

This is a pretty old restaurant and it is a restaurant that Koreans often go to. It’s not that hard to find the location because it’s only about 500m away from Exit 2 of Hongdae Entrance Station.

At first, foreigners are reluctant to eat it because they only saw the visual, but I really hope you try it! Maybe you can have an amazing experience!

And the reason why I choose this place as the Top5 Hongdae restaurants is because it’s one of my favorite restaurants!

4. Mapo Gopchang Town

1) Address : 20, Donggyo-ro 27-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
2) Recommendation: Gopchang
3) Opening hours: 12:00 to 01:00 daily

Korean late-night snack is gopchang! Gopchang is the intestines of cows, and they clean it up and grill it and boil it.

The restaurant I’m introducing now is famous for grilled tripe. It might be a little unfamiliar at first, so you might be reluctant to eat it, but if you’re on a trip to Korea, it’d be nice to try it! It’s a food that so many Koreans love, and it’s fantastic to eat with soju!

And after you’re done eating, you can stir-fry rice, which perfectly decorates the end.

This restaurant is over 20 years old in Hongdae, so you may have to line up because there are many customers, but I recommend you to visit it!

5. BADA HUI SARANG 2호점

1) Address : 143, Donggyo-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
2) Recommended menu: yellowtail, soft sashimi
3) Opening hours: 14:30 to 24:00 daily

As you can see from the map of Korea before you come to Korea, Korea is surrounded by the sea on three sides. That’s why I naturally come across a lot of seafood.

This restaurant is very famous for yellowtail sashimi, and the main store is in Hongdae, but I think it will be difficult to visit because there are too many people for you, foreigners, so I’m introducing you to the second store nearby! I’ve been there, but it tastes the same!

Sashimi is too expensive and not easy to access overseas, but you can eat it at a relatively low price in Korea, so I recommend you to visit here if you are traveling in Korea! Sashimi and soju are the best combination, so if you like alcohol, make sure to eat it with soju!

After you finish eating, there is a menu called spicy fish stew, and you must eat that, too!

And please note that this is the place with the most customers among the Top5 Hongdae restaurants, so the meal time is limited to 2 hours!
